Aslam Sher Khan: The Olympian, former minister who is ready to replace Rahul Gandhi as Congress chief

At a time when the top leadership of the Congress is under pressure to find someone who can steer the partys sinking ship, former Union Minister and hockey Olympian Aslam Sher Khan has offered to replace Rahul Gandhi as party chief and revive the grand old party in just two years. Rahul Gandhi is reportedly adamant on stepping down and asked the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision body of the party, to find his replacement. However, the CWC, too, is adamant to not let Gandhi go and asked him to stay and overhaul the party. The demand for his resignation began after the Congress under his leadership performed poorly and could win only 52 seats in the recent Lok Sabha polls. Since nothing moved in the last couple of weeks, Khan has written to CWC and Rahul Gandhi staking a claim for the top post in the party. The former minister in his letter said that he has proven his capability to perform in such situations as a hockey player. Khan was a member of the Indian hockey team that won the 1975 World Cup at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. When India was trailing 2-1 in the semi-final match of the 1975 world cup, I was given an opportunity to come on as a substitute in the dying moments of the game and used my resolve and self-belief to successfully score an equaliser for the Indian team. As history goes, Indian won the match and went on to lift the world cup trophy which is the only one till date, Khan wrote in his letter. The former minister also stated that after Babri demolition, the Congress was facing a tough challenge with loss of massive support. He said that the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao gave him the responsibility of minority affairs as part of PMO. Khan said that in the very limited time he managed to contain the loss of support. The Congress managed to win 140 seats in that elections, Khan pointed out. If you decide to place your trust and confidence in me then I assure you that I will leave no stone unturned and make sure that the party scores that equaliser in two years time,
