Cyclone Fani highlights: At least 16 killed in Odisha, relief work underway

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday morning said that severe cyclonic storm Fani has weakened and was centered at 60 km north-west of Kolkata at 05:30 am. It said that the storm has weakened into deep depression and hit Bangladesh by afternoon. It said that Fani entered Bengal at 12.30 am through Odishas Balasore and crossed Kharagpur with a wind of 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph. The storm is now lying close to Arambagh in Hooghly district. On Friday, Fani uprooted trees and triggered rains as it entered West Bengal post midnight on Saturday. It had made landfall and caused havoc in Odisha on Friday. According to media reports, at least eight people lost their lives in Odisha due to Fani which hit Puri coast with a wind speeds of over 200 kmph. Odishas capital Bhubaneswar also witnessed wide-scale destruction due to the storm. Meanwhile, rains lashed Kolkata as Fani entered West Bengal. Several trees were uprooted in Digha town and power, communications lines were snapped in many areas. Parts of Kolkata and the suburbs have also received moderate to heavy rainfall.
