BJP claims Chidambaram admitted Rajiv Gandhi lacked experience, messed up with Bofors

A day after senior Congress leader P Chidambaram hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for calling former PM Rajiv Gandhi corrupt, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday reminded him of his own admission that the late premier lacked experience in managing the defence ministry and defence contracts. BJP spokesperson and IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya tweeted an old interview of former finance minister P Chidambaram in which the Congress leader is seen admitting on camera that Rajiv Gandhi lacked the required experience in certain areas which proved very costly for the government. He (Rajiv Gandhi) was a complete novice as far as economic policies were concerned. And he had even less understanding when it came to matters of social issues.matters relating to law and order. For example, on the Shah Bano matter, he simply didnt quite understand the interplay between the judiciary and the society or the Muslims and personal laws and what you can do and what you cannot do. Shah Bano was a disastrous decision to reverse the Supreme Court and go back to old Muslim law. In fact, Margaret Alva and I opposed that legal change.and the worst crisis, of course, was lack of experience in managing defense ministry and managing defense contracts. The crisis hit us in the Bofors case, Chidambaram said in the undated interview shared by Amit Malviya. P Chidambaram on Rajiv Gandhi – he was a novice who messed up defence contracts. However, the prime minister refused to back down and challenged the Congress to fight the election in Rajiv Gandhis name if it was so proud of his legacy. Speaking to Financial Express Online, Amit Malviya said: Sikh genocide of 1984, Bhopal Gas tragedy and subsequent safe passage to Anderson, and Bofors are just a few of Rajiv Gandhi No amount of calling him a saint would change that. Death doesn Chidambaram has not issued a statement on the video shared by the BJP leader yet.
