Lok Sabha Election: TMC’s Anubrata Mondal put under house arrest ahead of polling

TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal has been put under house arrest till April 30, 2019. The move comes just a day before the fourth phase of polling in West Bengal. Polling officers had requested West Bengal CEO to put Mondal under house arrest for a free and fair election. According to media reports that the officials of the poll body and personnel of the central security forces will be with Mondal till Tuesday. Mondals mobile phone will also be monitored by the EC officials. Anubrata Mondal is known for creating controversies. Ahead of the 2016 assembly elections, the election commission had put him under 24-hour surveillance. In September 2018, the Birbhum strongman was seen on camera allegedly asking party workers to get a TMC rebel and a woman BJP worker arrested on a false case of having cannabis. The Congress has nominated Imam Hussain and CPI(M) has fielded Rezaul Karim from this Lok Sabha seat. Poling for the fourth phase will happen tomorrow. Over 1.30 crore people will decide the fate of 68 candidates in eight Lok Sabha constituencies. The poll body has deployed 580 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The security forces will cover all the polling stations in the state.
